Episode Transcript:

Intuitive coaches. They are the bright sparkly, rainbow colored unicorns in the coaching industry. Find out how they are different in today’s episode. Welcome to the everyday intuitive podcast. I’m your host, Heather Alice Shea intuitive life coach trainer status quo, shaker and founder of Atmana Coaching Academy.

Listen in each week to break up with your comfort zone claim your self confidence and radically embrace your role as an intuitive healer mentor and sought after coach let’s get within and get after it.

Hello and welcome to the everyday intuitive podcast. Today. We are talking about the differences. Between traditional life coaching and intuitive coaching. So this is such an awesome question. I get asked not only by emerging, intuitives emerging, intuitive coaches, but just by people in general. And so I am happy to tackle this one today on the podcast.

There are three main differences that we are going to dive into today, and my hope. After this podcast is to not only just provide you with clarity on what makes us different as intuitive focused practitioners, but also how you can really begin to in your own heart in mind, parse out the uniqueness that you do bring into the coaching industry as an intuitive focused coach.

I know that for many of you that are practicing in the online space or aspiring to start your practice in the online space, it might feel like the market is, you know, just completely saturated with the spiritually focused coach. But I have to, you know, really just stress that as you are online, you know, looking at your Facebook feed or your Instagram feed, Just know that that is a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of the number of people that are out there actually doing, helping and healing work.

Why do I mention this? Because many people tell me as they are beginning their practices, that they don’t understand what makes them unique, what makes them special or what they have to offer. In other words, their , you know, that special little. That only you have. And so while you might feel like being an intuitive focused practitioner, You know, it was just a dime a dozen.

I want to stress straight out of the gate that you are a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the population out there that is stepping forward and doing this work. And so that is quite something for us to. Kind of put a pin in and focus on that. If you are a person who is dedicated to using your intuition as a formal coaching skill, and by the end of the episode, you’re gonna understand, I think, how and why that is so important.

Then I want you to really own that. Own that that in and of itself does really set you apart as someone who is endeavoring to approach the transformational process in what is, from my opinion and perspective. A very, very modern forward thinking way beyond its time, you know, 21st century way of approaching the transformation process.

We need new tools for the new times that we are living in. And so one of the things that I really love about being an intuitive in general, but particularly an intuitive life coach educator, an intuition teacher, and you know, someone who trains life coaches in the traditional coaching skills. And also the intuitive coaching skills is that we are really pioneering what it is to develop those new tools, right.

To find easier, faster, more elegant, more aligned, more fun ways of doing the work that is so desperately needed in the world for ourselves and for others. So before we dive into what makes intuitive coaching and intuitive coaches distinct from traditional life coaches, I wanna talk about the similarities very quickly and there are, in my view, I think there are far, far, far more similarities between traditional coaches and intuitive coaches than there are differences.

That’s very important to high. If you are an intuitive focused practitioner, you are still using and are responsible for acquiring and mastering your traditional life coaching skills. So, you know, here in Atmana, we teach over 33. Coaching skills. And the first core part of our programming are 100 series coach skills classes are all in a traditional coaching skills.

They are your, you know, your nonverbals, your open questions, your closed questions, your reflecting feelings, your active listening, your attentive silence, understanding body language. Knowing how to, uh, provide feedback, knowing how to resolve discrepancies, knowing how to use multiple skills at one time and how to, you know, bring them together to create better change, how to set goals, how to hold people accountable, how to maintain client autonomy.

How do you, you know, just, I could just go on and on and on and on and on. There is so much that you, as an intuitive focused practitioner need to understand and know that is exactly, you know, the same process that traditional coaches. Process and skills that traditional coaches use. Okay. So that’s very important that the foundation is essentially the same.

Uh, traditional life coaches and intuitive coaches, both hold space for their clients to cultivate a sense of safety for the client to explore and transform, to create a space of creativity. Right. There can be no transformation without creativity. So intuitive coaches really create and hold the space for that as.

You know, and encourage client self discovery. That is something that intuitive coaches do that traditional coaches do, intuitive coaches, help their clients generate solutions and strategies, you know, discover what your clients want to align to what your clients wanna achieve, helping them set goals, holding them responsible, being their cheerleader, you know, in their accountability buddy.

From a to Z beginning to end of the process. So as you can see as intuitive practitioners, we are really responsible for the whole gamut. It’s just that we are adding on this additional part. Our philosophy, our idea, and what we believe about ourselves in the room as a coach and who we are and how we are showing up, being present with ourselves in the session, and then giving ourselves permission to use that as material to inform how we coach is really the big distinguisher.

So let’s go through these three. So as an intuitive focused coach, we hold this distinct from traditional coaches. We believe as intuitive coaches, that our intuition is a formal coaching skill. It is a formal coaching tool. That is a vital part of the process. So professional coaches actively utilize their intuitive skills within the professional coach setting to help gather information that fosters positive growth and change the traditional coaching paradigm and traditional coaches do not consider intuition a formal.

Coaching skill. They don’t hold intuition as a valid, you know, solid skill in their toolbox. Right. They might say that they use intuition. They might say, well, yeah, I mean, of course I do that, but they’re not recognizing it as a formal skill. They’re not providing their clients with that information through the informed consent process.

You know, they’re not doing any of that. Right. It’s just this passive. So to use an analogy here, a way that you can think about your intuition as a coaching skill is to think of it like a tool in your toolbox, right? You’ve got all of these tools in your toolbox as a coach, you’ve got your body language, your active listening, you’re reflecting, feeling all these things that, you know, these skills that you know how to do in order to invoke change and shepherded your client through the transformation process.

And for you, the intuitive focused practitioner, we recognize that a part of that toolbox is intuition. We say, yes, that is a formal coaching skill. That’s a tool in our toolbox that we recognize and we use. Right. So think of it like hammer, you know, screw driver, you know, Hacksaw, you know? Yeah. All of those are valid skills.

We’ve got our Phillips head screwdriver and our Flathead screwdriver. Okay. You know, so that’s like us. Oh, well, yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh, you know, a Phillips said screwdriver. Sure, sure, sure. But you never use it. You don’t put it in your toolbox. Right? So in this analogy, you know, intuition is your Phillips said, screwdriver, what we say is no, no, no, no.

We take it with us everywhere where we go. It’s a vital part of our toolbox. It’s a formal tool that we use. It’s not some ancillary thing. The second is that professional, intuitive coaches view their intuition and the intuitive coaching skills that they learn, which by the way, we train on many intuition to say that intuition is a skill is a very, very broad term intuition and how we apply it in session breaks down into many component skills.

That we teach here at, in, uh, atmana coaching academy. So, you know, we recognize that those skills that we are learning that come to us via our intuition are primary tools that we’re using. Okay. So it’s in other words, to go back to the toolbox analogy, we’re saying, okay, intuition is a tool in our toolbox.

And not only that, it’s our go-to tool. It’s one of our first tools. It’s like our favorite. Right? We love that baby. It’s, you know, it’s just the gift that keeps on given, you know, it’s our tried and trustee tool, right? So traditional coaches might rely on their intuition, but again, they kind of. You know, fall ass backwards into it.

They kind of just do it, you know, in this passive manner. It’s, you know, it isn’t really considered a primary tool or a formal tool. And so if it’s not really a formal tool that you recognize, you sure as heck aren’t going to be using it as your primary tool or as we as intuitive coaches, do we lead with that?

We’re very proud of that. We’re very, you know, in our knowing that. As we bring this faculty to bear in session through our presence and through our use of these skills, that we are better able to create, you know, better client outcomes that really move the needle on the health and wellbeing of our clients’ lives.

And the third is that professional, intuitive coaches receive training and support specific to the cultivation, maintenance and growth. Of their intuitive skills. So in other words, intuitive coaches commit to developing the skills needed to use this tool in their toolbox with the proficiency of a master.

Right? So. We’ve got our tool. We recognize that it’s in our toolbox, it’s our go-to tool. And we are very, very, very committed to using this tool very, very well to become skillful with this tool. And we do that through committing to continuing education and practice, you know, and just always remembering to hone and own and sharpen that skill much.

Like. You know, your traditional coaches work on their active listening skills or, you know, whatever it is that they, you know, feel is their go-to skill. Right? That’s what we’re doing. We’re saying no, no, no, no. We recognize that there is a deep need to continue to develop our own capacity, to use this skill in a way that is an alignment with who we are and what we’re doing in session.

Way showers and light workers and change agents in the world and the training and the, you know, additional support that we receive specific to the cultivation of this skill is done not only to attain mastery, but also really to, you know, continue to push that envelope on, you know, creating these new ways that, you know, I really have seen over the last eight years that I’ve been doing this as, you know, a professional intuitive.

Really, really, really do move the needle so much quicker, so much faster, so much more, you know, it just, it boggles the mind actually, when you allow this skill to do that heavy lifting for you. And I think a big reason why many traditional coaches and I would even, you know, maybe even through a therapist in, into the mix here, a big reason why they.

Use this, or don’t rely on it more often is that you’re just not taught to. You’re not, you know, I hate to put it this way, but you’re not really given permission. Right. You’re sort of taught that there’s a specific way you’re supposed to do it. And nobody ever looks at you and says, well, you know what?

You possess this ability. To gather information from this sort of right-brained energetic faculty that all human beings possess. Right. And that’s real and that’s valid. And just because it isn’t the traditional way we’ve done it. It’s not cognitive based. It’s energetically based just because it’s not how we’ve always done.

It doesn’t mean that it isn’t as valid. Right. I think people are waiting for permission to use this. And what I’ve noticed is really curious to me, the more you talk to practitioners who’ve been in business for a long time, or who’ve spent a lot of time seeing clients, they will tell you that they rely on their intuition more.

As a matter of fact, I can’t remember where I read this article, but it actually talked about that the research showed that the more experience a professional helper has in session, the more that they really do stop, or I’m not gonna say stop, but rely less on, you know, the fancy pants, you know, tools of the trade and just use themselves their own.

In our wisdom, their own presence in the session, the magic in the room, right? Sitting deeply with the client, attending to the client, paying attention to the client and just trusting that what comes up in that moment for both the coach and client is going to be exactly the magic that is needed to help that person, that soul find their way forward.

Not only out of the darkness, but into. Just the most descended and beautiful life possible. And so if you are an intuitive coach or you are someone who is inspiring to be one, I want you to understand something that you are really onto something. And I believe with every fiber of my being that in the next 10 to 20 years, this profession.

This aspect of coaching, right? The intuitive focus coaching is going to become more robust and more in demand than ever before. As human beings, you know, start to discover that. We really do need to return to the wisdom of the heart and return to our spiritual center and the core of who we really are to address the majority of the big life problems.

Right. This is, that’s kind of how we got into this messes. We are so, so, so, so. Smart from that cognitive perspective, smart intellectually, but that humanity, the compassion, the empathy, the connection, the wisdom of the soul, the wisdom of the heart is really what is needed to solve the major problems of modernity.

And so that is why, if you are an aspiring, intuitive culture, you are one. Now you are onto something incredible. And I wanna encourage you to continue on that. So I hope that these three differences from intuitive coaching and traditional coaching has inspired you to move even more deeply into your intuitive practice.
