I wanna talk to you about a ritual. That I started several years ago that has really changed my life. It has helped me remain more focused, more centered, more grounded while also being able to dream big, keep my head in the clouds in my eyes, on the stars, and really allow the visionary in me to feel like she has full reign and.

Freedom to dream big and allow myself to become the version of me that is really beyond anything that I could ever hope to become. This ritual has helped me do both of those things, which we typically think of as being contradictive, or we have to live with one or the other, right. If our head is in the clouds, that means our.

Aren’t on the ground. And if our feet are on the ground, that means that we have to stay here in the mundane world. Not allowing ourselves to be carried away by our fanciful ideas. I totally disagree. I think that human beings are born. I think that you’re born. With the capacity and the ability to do both, to be here in the physical world and also use your vision and your dreams and your imagination to change this physical world.

That’s the whole point of being here. Isn’t it right? To pull down from the ether that which could be using our mental strength in our vision, right? Our ability to see into the imagination, into the realm of possibility, and then. Through having our feet here on the ground make that happen. And so getting focused, using a word for the year is what I want to talk to you about today.

I am recording this a few days before Christmas in, uh, December of 2021. So throughout this podcast episode, I’m going to be talking about a word for the year, but please know that all of the principles I’m gonna cover in this episode. Can be applied to really anything that you are trying to maintain or create focus around.

So as long as you can think about whatever it is, you want to get focus on using intention, using a theme, which that’s really what a word for the year is. It’s an intention or a theme. As long as you can wrap this around a time bound. Domain in your life. So for instance, over the next 90 days, this is my word or over the next two years, this is my word, the next nine months, right?

The focus. Through being able to make this word attached to a period of time in your life. So in this episode, we’re gonna use 20, 22 for an example, but please know that the strategies you’re gonna learn this episode apply to really anything that you are trying to accomplish, that you wanna stay focused on until you achieve it.

Okay. So let’s talk about what I mean by a word for the year. So several, several years ago, gosh, I don’t even know how long ago it. I started getting into this zone, I would say maybe around October. Yeah, probably beginning of October of, I think it was maybe 2016. I noticed that all of these synchronicities would come to me and it started with me to be animal signs.

So if you are a believer or understand the law of synchronicity in our world, you will understand that synchronicity is a very, very, very real phenomena. PS, if you don’t know what synchronicity. I would just say Google, Carl Young and synchronicity, he wrote an entire evidence based research based book about synchronicity and how it works.

So please know that while it does sound woo. It actually is grounded in literature and science from some of the greatest minds that I’ve ever walked the face of the earth. So when you understand what synchronicity is, you really take it seriously and you start paying attention to it. And so I noticed that I would get, I would see repetitively at that time.

It was starfish. Little starfish would a friend of mine gave me starfish earrings. Another friend gave me a starfish bracelet. It just, I would see starfish like 3, 4, 5 times a day, every single day for like a month. I would see starfish everywhere I went and it really freaked me out. I was like, what the hell is going on with this starfish?

So much so that I realized, oh, you know, maybe I should Google this and see what starfish mean. And so at that time, in my life, 2016, I was heavy into my private coaching practice. I had begun training coaches in a one-on-one setting, kind of on the down low. Nobody really knew about it yet. I certainly wasn’t advertising it.

And so I was just kind of in a place in my career, in my life where I felt very, very Heden. I felt. Stale, I think would be the word very stale. Very, I didn’t feel stuck. It wasn’t that I was stuck. Things were moving, you know, things were going, things were working well for me, but I just didn’t feel invigorated.

I didn’t feel alive. I didn’t feel like I was really giving my life like the fullest of me, if that makes any sense. And so when I decided to Google the meaning of what starfish was, it almost stopped me dead in my track. So of course with animal signs, they always have many, many different meanings. But the one with the starfish that really got me was regeneration that starfish represent regeneration on the archetypal level.

So starfish can regrow their limbs. They are really, really versatile creatures. You really can’t hold a starfish down. They are such a fantastic little creature. They’re always able to reinvent themselves because they have these incredible regenerative properties. Right. And so I realized in that moment that I was being told by God universe to reinvent myself and to realize that I always have an opportunity to regenerate and to start again new and that there’s no reason to feel stale.

I just wasn’t allowing myself really to take the pivots and the shifts that I needed to take in my life. And so from that year forward, I started really paying attention to having a theme or a word for the year. And so my word in 2017 as I went into 2017 was regenerate, right. Renew, regenerate that, and to be resilient, you know, that was kind of what I centered my year around.

So. I set that with the intention of, by the end of 2017, that I would feel regenerated, that I would feel resilient, that I would feel. More on purpose than ever in my life. And that I would be willing to say yes and no to, you know, make my decisions through that lens. You know, is this gonna regenerate me?

Is this gonna reinvigorate me? Right. And I found it so incredibly helpful because in 2017, that was the year that I finally said yes, to going back to graduate school, getting my master’s degree in clinical mental health counsel. Which was a complete game changer for me in terms of the trajectory of my coaching.

And of course, you know, I’m sitting here today on a seven figure life coach training certification company that would not have been born. Had I not had that year of 2017 of filtering. Everything to every decision I had to make. And every experience that I had through this lens of is this going to regenerate me?

Is this going to help me feel the way I know that I need to feel in my life so that I don’t feel stale so that I don’t feel. UN alive. Right? And so that was an incredibly pivotal year in my life because I had this focus. So that is really emblematic. I think of what a word for the year does for you, the type of focus that it gives you.

So think of your word for the year and it could be an animal symbol for me, the starfish came to me and the word, you know, resilient regenerative. It ended up being a lot of words. Is what came to me, right? So you kind of get a theme or a feeling of what you want your year to be like, okay, that’s the power of the word.

So your word of the year is a theme or an intention that organizes your goals, your thoughts, your feelings, your beliefs, and your actions over a period of time. So the point of the word of the year is to help you maintain integrity and intentionality. With your time, your energy and your resources. That is the point of it.

That’s what it buys you. That’s how it helps you. So imagine if you could just really quickly with every decision you made, should I buy this? Should I spend time on this? Should I do this? Should I not do this with everything in your life? If you were to just really quickly, it just takes a few seconds.

Say, is this gonna regenerate me? Is this gonna bring me more peace? Is this gonna bring me more hope, love, whatever your word is, right? It is such a fantastic. To maintain solidarity with what your soul is calling you to do. It’s a way for you to hold yourself accountable. And that is what I love so much about it.

So ever since 2016, I sat down. And I have, you know, gotten really intentional, close to the end of my year. Maybe starting in October, I sort of peak up and start thinking to myself. Okay. It’s, you know, it’s Q4, what’s on the horizon for my next year. And a word will always come to me. So in a moment, I’m gonna run you through some powerful questions that you can ask yourself to discover your.

And then we’re gonna talk about what you can do once you have your word, how you live in that space. But right now I wanna go over some benefits of your word for the year. So it’s gonna help you stay focused on what it is you truly want. Okay. You’re not gonna be distracted. Your energy’s not gonna be scattered all over the place.

It’s gonna help you stay focused over that period of time on what you truly. It helps you set realistic goals. You know, you can’t do everything all the time. You can’t. The main reason why we don’t accomplish more of what we wanna accomplish in life is lack of focus. It’s not that you don’t have the time, the money or the energy it’s that you’re spending your time, your money and your energy in a way that does not allow you to create impact because of your spread too thin.

So it helps concentrate, concentrate. Your ability to manifest and to create what you want. Right. It takes it down into a focus that’s really, really effective. Okay. So it helps you set realistic goals. It helps you say, you know, realize you can’t do everything all the time. And so this is, think of it like a filter that you’re gonna run all of your decisions through.

It helps you fully embody whatever it is you’re trying to become. Right. Whatever it is you’re trying to bring into the world. It helps you really fully embody that. Because you’re giving yourself time to work at your own pace. So when you have a word for the year again, we’re making it timebound right.

So you realize how much time you have to work on. And because of that, it creates this feeling of spaciousness. It’s like, you know, I don’t have to have this done tomorrow, right? It can be three months, four months, five months. In other words, you’re letting yourself grow into this thing. You’re letting yourself have time to change and to flourish and to discover and to play with this thing that you are trying to bring into the world.

Whether that’s a way of being for yourself, you just want to be differently. Maybe your word for example, would be patience. Maybe you’re trying to learn how to become a more patient person, or maybe you’re trying to manifest something into the world. Right. It doesn’t matter what it is. It allows you to have that time to really let it grow organically within your mind, your body, your heart, and your soul.

So I’m a huge, huge fan of having a word for the year. I. Haven’t ever since that time, I’ve always had a word for the year. And so if you don’t have one, please, please, please ask yourself these questions right here. That will help you come up with your word. So I wanna share with you really quick, my word for 2022.

Now, since I’ve had several years of doing this, I’ve kind of discovered that it’s good for me to have a word for the year for my company, which now includes, you know, a mighty little team I have. Human beings, you know, that are a part about, than just myself now. So now that I have, you know, a pretty sizable team and, you know, gosh, so many clients at this point that we take care of, I do find it beneficial to have a separate word because you know what, man, isn’t me, right.

I’m a human being. There’s my own personal life and my own personal goals. And then the goals of my company. So if you would like to have a separate word for your company, then please feel free to do that too. I think it’s actually really quite beautiful to do that. So my personal word for 2022 is peace.

My word is peace. My word for 2021 on a personal level was joy. And what I love so much about setting your word is you. Learn more about what the thing is that you’re trying to manifest into the world. You learn more about that thing than you ever thought possible. So I discovered with joy when I set joy for my word, I was like, you know what?

I just wanna be happier. I work a lot, you know, I’m a seriously driven person. I don’t know if I’ve ever met anybody more ambitious than I am. I’m incredibly ambitious. I’m insanely driven. And I don’t really know if I naturally put joy and downtime and rest first, it’s just not a priority for me. It never really has been.

And so this was an area of my character and my personality that I really felt like I needed to work on. You know, what is the point? And being super successful, if you never stop and enjoy it, you know, if you’re not like embodying the benefit of what you’re trying to accomplish. Right. So I thought, wow, that’s something I need to work on.

I think I’ve. Really nailed the whole knowing how to build a company and, you know, make money and be successful and, you know, have all of those other kind of more stereotypical goals. I really walked into this year, you know, knowing that that was something that I had spent a lot of time cultivating. But joy was really low on my priority.

So I said, you know what, I’m gonna have joy, be my word for the year. And what is so interesting about that? I, that I learned that joy. Isn’t what I think it is. I learned that joy for me looks a lot like accomplishment in my professional life. Joy for me just looks differently than it does for other people.

So I walked into this year thinking that I needed to have joy. Be. Learning how to cook or, you know, spending more time doing, you know, regular kind of everyday human things. And what I realized is those things actually don’t make me happy. they don’t make me joyful. The things that make me joyful are actually the things that I have previously spent my time on.

I just needed to do them with more balance harmony and intention. So that’s kind of the gift of it is you learn to walk through life, your way, realizing that lots of times the things that you. You don’t have, or you don’t need, or that you would like to have, or you would like to embody you maybe learned that you are a little bit better at it than you think you are, and you have a chance to really develop a relationship with the thing that you’re trying to embody or become or express or acquire in a way that is so perfectly aligned for you.

So for instance, I discovered that the thing that makes me really joyful is building a team. Having people pay their mortgage on. You know, the abundance that atmana has brought into their lives. I can’t tell you how much that means to me. I had no idea that that would make me so joyful on a personal level to know that there are people in this world that are living their purpose through this company that I have created, right.

Or I should say, was given to me from spirit to create through. That feels really good to me. That actually brings me more joy than, you know, working less ever could in a million years. Right. And so as I wind down 2021, I realize, you know, yeah, I think I have expressed and embodied joy. I just have done it in a way that’s really different.

And so I wanna offer that to you as something for you to really put that feather in your cap. Right. Realize that you can do this your way. So often the things that we wanna have, I think we feel like we should have them, or we should be them because, you know, well, that’s what we’re being told. Right. But really this is about you discovering you and you being able to do this in the way that works for you.

So when I sat down to make my word for this year, I realized that it had to be peace mainly because this is a big one. For me. I’ve never been a very peaceful person. My mother would tell me when I was young, she would say, Heather, you are two different people trapped in the same body and you are at war.

These two people are at war with themselves. I am not a peaceful person by nature. I’m an, any Grammy human design manifester. Like I was put on this earth to challenge things, to shake shit up, to look people in the face and say, no, we’re gonna do it differently. You know, everything about me is pretty confrontational.

So peace doesn’t come easy, you know? So I thought to myself, well, I’m really gonna learn to embody peace and I’m so excited to discover what peace actually is for me. I have no clue, but I am about to discover it in 2022. And my word for ATMANA is relationships. So, you know, I’ve built this company, singlehandedly, you know, kind of session by session brick by brick, you know, really on my own for the majority of the time that atmana’s been existence.

And what is so beautiful about having a team is I get to do this now in beautiful relationship with other people. I really want to, as I feel into Mont in 2022, I really feel myself linking arms with other people and, you know, joining together in that collective sort of synergistic. Not only with my team, but with other coaches, other professionals.

So I’m really, really excited. I think that’s gonna be so beautiful forma and for our community to say, Hey, let’s do this together. Right. Let’s do this through beautiful relationships. So that is my word for AHMA for 2022 it’s peace and relationships. So here are some questions that you can ask yourself to come up with these words.

So here’s kind of my process. I sit. and I just do a meditation. I think about these things, I feel into these things. Okay. So here are a couple of questions. What quality or characteristic would you like to embody more? So this one is really about the, be your beingness, right? For me, I wanted to be a more joyful person and a more peaceful person.

Right. So what quality or characteristic would you like to embody? It could literally be anything. It doesn’t matter. It could be absolutely anything. Right. What would you like to experience more of? That’s another great question. What would you like to experience more of another question? What would you like to feel more of?

Here is a question that’s a bit of a variant of those two. What would you like to master so that you could feel more of a thing or be more of a thing or experience more of a thing? So I would like to be more peaceful, but I would also like to master. The things inside of me that prevent me from being more peaceful.

Right. I would like to overcome those internal conflicts that stop me from being more peaceful. Right. So what I have discovered thus far, cuz I figured out peace was my word in November of last month, I discovered peace was my word and what I already have it insight into piece. The reason why I’m not peaceful is because often I’m very determined that what I want happens, which is very Ingram eight, you know, human design manifest.

But what I’m learning with peace is that it’s about letting go of what I want so that something greater can come in. Right. Isn’t that interesting? Right. So you learn a lot about whatever it is. So what I need to master is learning how to let go a little bit that determination and that drive and that vision I have is great.

And it’s gotten me far, but maybe next year I can let go of that a little bit, you know, just make some space for other things to come in. So when you ask the question from the perspective of what would you like to master so that you can feel. You know, whatever it is you wanna feel or experience, it really kind of adds a different flavor to it.

Right. It brings up a lot more. It unearths a lot more of the things that you would like to work on within yourself. Another question is what is something in your life that you feel has always alluded you? what is something that you just feel it’s like, you know, trying to catch the wind, you just can’t, you never can quite seem to catch it.

So peace is certainly mine, right? Definitely something I’ve just like, Ugh, you know, that’s something for other people. I’m here to rage against the dying of the night and, you know, do crazy shit and, you know, leave my mark on the world. You know, that’s how I’ve always felt about it. But what if that’s not the case for me?

What if I can still, you know, be in the world in the way that I wanna be in the world and make the change I want to make, but do it peacefully. I don’t know what that would be. Like. I have no clue, but hopefully I’m gonna find out next year. Right. So what do you feel has always alluded you? What are the ways of being that you have, the way that you move through the world?

Ways of being mean, your thinking, your beliefs, your thoughts, your actions, and your feelings. What are those ways of being that? You know, you look at yourself and you’re like, well, I can’t be this way because that’s not me. Well, is it though? Or are you just set in a pattern? Are you set in a habit? You know, who says I can’t be peaceful.

Who says why? Because when I was 12, my mother told me I was at war with myself. I was two different people trapped in the same body. And those two people are at war. Does that always have to be my story? No, it does not. It does not. Is that even true? No, it is not. It’s not true at all. Right. Another way I could paraphrase, that would be to say Heather, you’re a very dynamic person.

It doesn’t have to, it’s just all the story you wanna tell yourself. Right? So what are those things that you feel has always alluded you. What are the things that you believe about yourself? Maybe open up to the idea that your word is something that is going to help you break that stereotype that you have with yourself.

And that is what it is. It’s a stereotype you’re stereotyping yourself. You’re creating a caricature of yourself, right? It is a caricature of myself that I cannot be peaceful. That’s ridiculous. Of course I can. Right. I just need to focus on it. I’ve never focused on it, which is the power of the word for the year.

It gives you that focus. Okay. Another thing, and this is maybe the most important question is what would make you happier, healthier and wealthier? What would, if you could embody this thing or accomplish this thing would give you the most bang for your buck in all areas of your life. And it would up level every area in your life, not just your relationships, not just your spiritual practice, not just your career, not just one thing, but all things right.

That it would impact. It would, in other words, this is like a word with leverage. It would up level everything. So that’s a doozy, right? To think of a word that would change everything for you. In my case, peace is definitely that. Okay. So once you have your word, you are going to infuse it in everything beyond what you’re gonna do is you’re gonna notice how it shows up.

In your life every single day and how it’s not showing up. When you have a decision to make, you’re gonna ask, oh, is this gonna make me more peaceful? Is this gonna make me more joyful? Is this gonna make me whatever that thing is? Second thing you can do is you can choose an animal or something from nature, the natural world, right?

A tree, a flower, an insect, an it doesn’t matter what it is. Right? Who cares? Just find something in our physical world that you feel is emblematic of that thing. Okay. So in the year after, so in 2018, my animal was a lion and my word was strength. Okay. Cuz I was like year two into grad school and oh my God, I wanted to die.

It was like so hard. So I had a lion be my totem animal and strength was my word. Okay. So you can also then play around with that. What is an animal or something from nature that can give you a visual that you can think about in addition to your word that will really help anchor in this intention? Okay.

So for me, my word is peace next year. And my animal is a dove, right? Pretty stereotypical, pretty basic. Right. I’m not I’m not trying to be over here making it super fancy. Pretty simple. My word is peace and my animal is a dove, right. For me to just picture this like beautiful white bird. Okay. So, and I’m sure that as I move through the year, I’m gonna see.

Totems and symbols that remind me of peace and I’ll stay open to those two, but infuse this in everything. Notice how it is showing up in your life beyond just it being, you know, what is a literal translation of it, and then stay open to it looking incredibly different than what you think. It’s going to look like joy for me did not look like what I thought it was going to look like.

It looked insanely different. Okay. It looked insanely different. I am so happy that I now know what joy looks like for me, it might look like somebody else’s hell. Okay. It might look like somebody else’s nightmare of a life, but I don’t care. That’s I’m not them. Right. I’m giving myself permission to live joyfully in the way that works for me.

Okay. And I’m gonna do the same thing with peace. I don’t know. Maybe next year on the outside, it’s gonna look like the most unpeaceful life ever, but maybe inside of myself, I experience it as being like, oh, finally. Finally, I feel at peace with myself, you know, I don’t know. I don’t know, but I’m letting myself be open to whatever that’s gonna be.

Okay. So what is your word for the year? What is that thing that is gonna help you organize your way of being and your way of doing in the world? Give yourself this gift. My promise to you is that you can hone in on one word and it is going to absolutely revolutionize your ability. To get what you want out of life to help you create what you want out of life and more than anything, understand that, that thing that you are creating is yourself.
